The Pentecostal Son Drops His Very First Gospel CD
Written by Caleb Petersen
Luigi Phillips also known as the "Pinkster seun" (Pentecostal son) has recently released his very own Gospel CD.
He faced many challenges growing up in Manenberg which is an area that's known for gangsterism, but his mother always told him that he should follow his dreams and rise above his circumstances. He was forced to drop out of school at a young age and struggled to find a job. He then dedicated his time to becoming a professional soccer player.
In 2014 he decided to leave soccer and focus on doing Gospel concerts. He dreamt of becoming a member of Joyous Celebration and performing on a stage in front of thousands of people. One day at a mother's rally while playing drums a member of the Church told him that she sees pentecostal in him and this is where the nickname "Pinkster seun" actually came about. This inspired him and he held his first concert on 2 November 2014 with the aim of getting young people to join a youth service and to make a difference within the community of Manenberg and over 300 youngsters gathered there that day. Since then his held two concerts each year, one which is to raise funds to give back to the community and one that is free for everyone to join. His also collaborated with artists such as Johnathan Rubain, Emo Adams and Lukmaan Adams. He continues to show that good can come out of Manenberg and is striving towards international recognition.
When asked what the motivation behind his Gospel CD titled "Something about the blood of Jesus" was, he said "I was in a pit of depression and had a hard time processing my mother's death. When I wrote this song the healing started slowly and today I stand in victory."
